Mentorship for Health Research Training Fellows - Clinical Academic Training (CAT) for Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professions and Healthcare Scientist (HCS) Programmes

Dr Lisa Roberts

Lisa is a clinical academic working as a consultant physiotherapist and senior lecturer in physiotherapy.  Her current fellowship (2007-13), at the University of Southampton, funded by Arthritis Research UK, is investigating communication issues and clinical decision-making in consultations between physiotherapists and people with back pain.  It uses mixed methods – predominantly qualitative.  Her other current research interests include: red flags; pain amplification in children; developmental dysplasia of the hip; the Alexander Technique; and rehabilitation with ballroom dancing.

Lisa also works as a consultant physiotherapist at University Hospital Southampton (NHS) Foundation Trust, in the musculoskeletal outpatient department, where alongside her clinical work, she leads the clinical effectiveness agenda, supporting 120 clinicians with audits, service evaluations, higher degrees and disseminating their scholarly work.  This role was awarded a vice-chancellor’s award in 2008 and forms part of the Southampton Hub of theAHP Research Network.

Lisa is currently supervising 4 doctoral and 2 masters students, and has previously supervised PhD, MPhil and MSc students to completion, with 3 students achieving national / international awards. Lisa’s external roles include: Trustee and Chair of the Research Committee of BackCare andvice-Chair of the Southampton Branch; former secretary to the Society for Back Pain Research; and earlier this year, she was a member of the Arthritis Research UK Educational Fellowship panel.
