Professor Anthony Redmond

Prof Redmond leads the Leeds foot and ankle research group ‘FASTER’, and contributes to a broader portfolio of work in rheumatology and orthopedics across the Leeds NIHR Musculoskeletal BRU and the Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. His work is based on a programme funded by the NIHR, EPSRC, Arthritis Research UK and industry worth in excess of £3million, investigating mechanical and biological interactions in musculoskeletal disease. Studies encompass basic and translational research into joint function in the rheumatic diseases and pre and post joint replacement; clinical trials in a range of musculoskeletal conditions; and translational research.

A podiatrist by background, with a PhD in medicine, Prof Redmond has been active in the development of evidence-based standards for foot health services and care pathways. He contributed to the NICE guideline development groups for CG59 (osteoarthritis) and CG79 (rheumatoid arthritis) and was lead author on the 2008 ARMA National Standards of Care for foot problems in musculoskeletal diseases. Most recently Prof Redmond was lead on a research internship scheme for graduate AHPs funded by Arthritis Research UK.

Prof Redmond was until 2010, funded personally by an NIHR post doc fellowship and now supervises two NIHR C-DRF fellows as well running a dedicated orthopaedic/bioengineering workstream with the Leeds NIHR BRU.
